What is freight capacity?
Before getting into the heart of the matter, which is only the steps to follow to obtain the capacity to transport goods, it is first important to know what it really is. In a simpler way, it is a certificate that one must obtain, apart from the B license, to be able to create his own transport company. However, it should be noted that it can take two forms. If you wish to use vehicles with a maximum weight of less than 3.5 tons, you will need to have the capacity to transport light goods. On the other hand, if you wish to operate with vehicles weighing less than or greater than 3.5 MPG, you must be able to do so. In addition, you should know that if the transport activity is accessory to another activity, you will not need this certificate.
What training should I take to get it?
Whatever your choice, whether it is for the light or heavy transport capacity, you can obtain your certificate either by following a training course and then taking an exam, or by validating your professional experience in the field. Moreover, as far as the capacity of light goods transport is concerned, you should know that you can perfectly apply to the regional direction of environment, development and housing, if during the last 10 years, you have been at the head of a transport company. If the authorities have not granted your application, you will have to undergo training and pass an exam. And for the capacity of heavy goods transport, you can apply if you have been manager of a transport company for at least 10 years. If you are not accepted, do not hesitate to contact a specialized center for training in order to take the exam.
What’s next?
Once you have obtained your freight capacity, you will need to prove financial capacity, which varies depending on your vehicle. For light vehicles, for example, the sum required is 1,800 euros for the first vehicle, then 900 euros for each additional vehicle. The financial capacity will be verified, following the certificate that the DREAL will send. And without it, you can’t start your business. Once you have the transport capacity and the financial capacity, you will have to apply for the approval of the DREAL. To do so, you will have to provide a file including your capacities, a Cerfa form and a document justifying that you can perfectly exercise this trade.
